Shot Glass Design Tips and Advice
Based on our years of experience in working with designs for shot glasses and other printed bartending supplies we have determine some best practices that will help you design your own shot glass. Below are examples of a good shot glass design and a bad shot glass design. First we will go over a bad shot glass design, and then demonstrate how to correct and improve on the shot glass design. In our example we went with a worst case scenario where the names of the couple are pretty long. In a lot of wedding favor shot glass cases, we see a lot of people that either have much shorter names or they use a shortened nickname. For a good description of raster images vs. bitmap images click here.
Bad Shot Glass Design
This is an example of a bad shot glass design. There are many things wrong with this, or that could be greatly improved
- Multi Colored - Shot glasses need to be a single color ink. The only exception for a second color is in case the clipart or the uploaded graphic contains white, which will not be printed any ways. Since this design contains red and black it will need to be modified to either be all black or all red.
- Text is too Cramped - The shot glass as it appears on the screen is very close to the actual size. If the text is hard to read on the screen it will most likely be hard to read once printed. Also, if you can't make out any white space between characters, this will also make the text more difficult to read.
- Small Graphic - Similiar to the advice on the size of text, if the graphic is hard to see on the screen it will most likely be difficult to see on the printed product.
- Design Goes Outside the Lines - Some of this design is going outside of the allowed print space. If this design were to be printed as seen on the screen the M and the A in the couple's names could be cut off.
Good Shot Glass Design
This is an example of a good shot glass design. In this design we have taken the same basic information from the bad shot glass design and made the corrections and improvements.
- Single Colored - The design has been adjust to only contain black ink. Black is usually a good color to go with on a product like a shot glass since it is the most bold, and can be read in many lighting circumstances.
- Text is Spaced - Text should be as large as possible. Since adding additional space and size to the names text wasn't possible, we put the text on more than one line. This greatly improved the readability of the design.
- Larger Graphic - The size of the graphic being used has been increased to a size that makes it much more visible once printed.
- Design is Within the Lines - Now the design fits inside of the allowable print area, so the entire graphic will now be printed as seen on the screen.
Now font and clipart being used in a design is very much up to personal opinion. You may not like the exact design we have here, but the main point we are trying to demonstrate here is the basic design principles to a good looking shot glass.
